localStand – Help Us to Help Our Pennsylvania Neighbors

Local Stand Final

THANK YOU FOR VISITING OUR PAGE!

Imagine turning on the tap and seeing gray or black water come out. Imagine discovering that the water in your shower stings your skin and burns your nostrils. Imagine pouring water that gels in the glass.

Families across the Marcellus Shale region of Pennsylvania are making discoveries like those as a result of natural gas drilling on or near their properties. Over 1000 complaints have been made to the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). The agency has determined that at least 161 water wells were contaminated as a result of hydraulic fracturing for natural gas through the fall of 2012, while some of the test results are inconclusive or in dispute.  An investigative report by Laura Legere of the Scranton Times-Tribune found that the DEP has not done a good job of tracking these cases of contamination, so it’s likely that there are more positive determinations in their files. And the complaints keep coming.

Unfortunately, the families are often left to their own devices to replace their contaminated water. They’ve got to get huge tanks, or “water buffaloes”, to store the water they pay to have trucked to their homes in order to have clean water to drink, to bathe in, to cook with, to do all the things we take for granted. The companies responsible and the government in charge of regulating those companies have turned their backs on Pennsylvanians.
